Muslims Running in Canadian Municipal Elections

This October, cities in British Columbia, Ontario, and Manitoba are holding elections for the positions of mayor, city councillors, and school board trustees.

As municipal elections are in theory non-partisan (not connected to any political party) anyone is free to run, making municipal politics relatively more accessible than either provincial or federal politics where to have a chance of winning, you need to win the nomination to be an offical candidate of a major political party.

We think readers will be excited by the diversity of Muslims, particularly younger Muslims, who are running across the country.

Muslim Link has compiled a list of some of the Muslims who are running in each province.

This is NOT a complete list, if you would like to be added email us at chief@muslimlink.ca.

Election Day in British Columbia was Saturday, October 20. BC Muslim Voters and AlameenPost.com worked to keep Muslim voters informed about the elections. Congrations to Pakistani Canadian Anita Ansari for being elected as a school trustee in New Westminister, BC, Somali Canadian Sharmarke Dubow for being elected as a city councillor in Victoria, BC, and Egyptian Canadian Ahmed Yousef for being elected as a city councillor in Maple Ridge, BC.
